Trustee Maria Siguenza

Washington Governor Jay Inslee appointed María Sigüenza to the Western Washington University Board of Trustees, effective October 1, 2024, to fill the seat that Sue Sharpe held since 2012. Trustee Sigüenza’s six-year term will expire September 30, 2030. 

Sigüenza has served as the executive director of the Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs since her appointment in 2018. The commission is a cabinet agency whose mission is to improve public policy and deliver government services by advising the Governor, the Legislature, and state agencies on issues affecting Latine and Hispanic Washingtonians. In September of 2024, she was appointed as acting executive director to the Women's Commission under the Office of the Governor charged to support gender equity and improve economic and social conditions for women in Washington.  

Her previous roles include serving as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion manager at the Washington State Department of Licensing and as the Business Diversity and Legislative Program manager at the Department of Social and Health Services.  

Sigüenza holds a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Social Sciences from Western Washington University and a Global Health Delivery Certificate from Harvard University. 

Trustee Sigüenza will serve on the Board’s Finance, Audit and Enterprise Risk Management Committee.
